This week we had a nice run of feeder cattle that sold into a very active market. The feeder steers all sold $2-5 stronger with lots of demand for light gross weights and 900-1000lb steers. The heifers all traded stronger as well. There was lots of demand for 600lb gross weight heifers and breeding quality heifers.
The cows traded fully steady at very high levels, with good cows trading between 208 and 218.
The bull market is amazing as well, topping out today at 262.
Those of you that analyze the markets already knew this, but the USDA feed report that was released this past Friday showed very bullish numbers with placements and cattle on feed numbers being significantly lower year after year. These lower North American cattle numbers are great for producers and prices but poses challenges for the packing and feedlot industries. It seems hard to believe that any leader would place a tariff on something they are so clearly short of, and will no doubt throw gasoline on the affordability and inflation fires that already burning. Time will tell if they are actually willing to follow through.
Remember that the Allandale Angus Bull sale with guests Waveny Angus, and Movin' On Farms is this Friday, March 28, with palpated replacement heifers to follow the sale of the bulls!
Have a great rest of the week.
